How Do You Show Up Each And Every Day?
Last week, I discussed the importance of defining your aspirations and goals to achieve greater happiness in life. However, another critical piece of the puzzle is asking yourself, "How do I show up each and every day to live up to my goals?"
Simply knowing your goals doesn't guarantee success unless you make a consistent effort.
Let's simplify this concept. Suppose you've identified what will bring more happiness into your life, such as leading a healthy lifestyle.
One goal you set is to get into shape and stay fit. Great! Great aspiration, an even better goal. Part of the job is done. You might have even signed up for a gym membership in your neighborhood and attended four times in one week. But suddenly, a few weeks pass, distractions arise—maybe work overload, sick children, or visiting friends and parents—and you begin to skip your gym sessions one after another.
Not even that, when you're overworked and stressed, you find yourself eating junk food, leaving those healthy eating books you bought once untouched on the kitchen table.
What went wrong here? You stopped showing up. You stopped living up to your goal.
So, how do we continue to live up to our goals?
Once you have a set goal, remind yourself (perhaps with a post-it on your wall or a desk note) asking, "How do I show up every day in a way that helps me fulfill my goal?" Consider setting a calendar reminder at the end of each day to ask:
"Did I show up today in a way that brought me closer to my goal?"
If the answer is yes, well done—you're one step closer to your aspiration, and I hope you'll continue this on a daily basis. If the answer is no, try to understand what got in a way and address it the following day.
Remember, having a clear goal doesn't mean you can sit back and relax. The real work is just starting.
SHOW UP EVERY DAY for what is important to you.
