You Already Have What You Need to Be Happy
“Sometimes it's the smallest things that take up the most room in our hearts,” said Winnie the Pooh, the beloved character created by A.A. Milne.
It’s interesting how often we find ourselves chasing after big, extraordinary experiences in life, assuming they hold the key to happiness. But how often do we stop to recognize that peace and happiness can be found in the small, everyday moments? Recently, I was reminded of this truth during an "autumn hunt" with my family.
I realized that my most cherished memories weren’t from scenic drives through Tennessee, visits to the Smoky Mountains, or dining at the best restaurants.
Instead, they came from the simplest of activities: walking with my sons around the house to spot a few pumpkins on a neighbor’s doorstep and search for imaginary lions—my son Jakob’s current fascination; sitting in a hammock in our backyard, feeling the cool evening air on my skin; or snuggling under a blanket by the fireplace, watching the flames dance while soft jazz played in the background—all moments that filled me with a sense of calm and contentment.
It's easy to get caught up in the chase for bigger achievements, thinking they'll bring lasting joy. But when we finally reach the top of the mountain, that momentary happiness can quickly fade, leaving us wondering if something is still missing. Perhaps, in the pursuit of these grand goals, we overlook the simple joys that are already part of our daily lives.
This is because true happiness, as I’ve started to discover, often lies in the small things. It may take time for us to fully see and feel this, but once we do, it can transform our entire outlook on life.
Next time you find yourself searching for happiness, take a moment to look around you, first. The peace and joy you’re looking for might just be in front of you—maybe it’s a smile on your child’s face, your pet cozied up on your lap, a cup of freshly brewed coffee, a “thank you” email from your colleague, the sound of your favorite piece of music, or a gentle breeze of fresh air. It’s already there.
So what are the small moments that bring YOU peace and joy? Embracing these small joys can change how we view happiness—not as something distant to be chased, but as something close, something we create and nurture every day. Something that’s already here.
